How to have a miserable birthday in 12 simple steps:
1. Save all the birthday fun for the evening of your birthday, so that your Daddy can be a part of the celebration.
2. Slide off your big sister's bed and hurt your arm a half hour before Daddy comes home to commence the birthday celebration.
3. Manage to accomplish this feat while no one is looking, so that no one knows for sure exactly what happened. (This is the trickiest part, since there are three other children in the room with you at the time!!)
4. Refuse to move your arm or let anyone touch it until you have your Mom sufficiently convinced that something is seriously wrong.
5. Ignore your Dad's advice to "just let it wait until morning", and accompany your Mom to the ER (without stopping to eat supper first.)
6. Innocently believe your Mom when you ask her if you will have to get a shot and she says, "No, honey" because, really, what in the world about a possibly-broken arm could require a shot?!
7. Hate your Mom later when the first thing the ER nurse does is give you a shot of morphine.
8. Endure 45 grueling minutes in X-ray while your arm is twisted every way that it hurts in order to get a sufficient picture for the doctor.
9. Listen to that same doctor tell your Mom that there is a barely visible abnormality in your bone that could be a hairline fracture, but could also just be a blood vessel or some other such thing, and you will need to wait a full 24 hours to let a radiologist look at the film in order to know for sure. (In other words, you just went through all of this possibly for nothing.)
10. Endure having your arm twisted every way that it hurts yet again while the nurse applies a soft cast that will splint your arm until you get the permanent one in a few days (if the doctor makes up his mind that your arm is actually broken.)
11. Go to bed at 10:00 that night, still having unopened birthday presents and untouched birthday cake sitting on the kitchen counter.
12. Accomplish all of this 36 hours before your family leaves out of town for a camping trip that's been planned since January!
Happy Birthday!!!

Oh my!!!! Poor Girl :( I hope her pain is lessened this morning and it's indeed not broke-
Isn't it terrible to be a parent on days like that? I'll make sure we pray for your family at the gathering tonight. We'll miss you! Hang on.
