Needless to say, our 4 children will be on a sugar high for the next YEAR! (Well...arguably, that won't look any different than their normal behavior...either way, LOOK OUT!!!)
We had a wonderful Easter. We went to the early service at our church, and our two oldest children came into "big people service" with us. On Good Friday, our three oldest children came into the service with us because childcare stopped after age 4. It was then that we determined our kindergartner does not have the capacity to sit still quietly for 2.3 seconds, let alone an hour, and we're pretty sure she won't develop that skill until she's around 43 years old. So, she got booted into Sunday school along with her younger sister on Sunday! :-) It was really neat to have our two oldest go through the whole Easter experience at church with us - the dramatic change from Good Friday to Easter Sunday morning. Our oldest daughter took communion for the first time on Good Friday this year. She asked Daddy if she could, he peppered her with a whole bunch of questions about what it meant, she aced his test with flying colors, so we decided she was ready. Pretty special.
Both sides of our families gather in one big group for major holidays - one of the many positive aspects of having grown up with your spouse! We all piled into my husband's parent's house and had a fabulous time together. After dinner, all the kids did a big egg hunt outside - beautiful weather for it! Probably the highlight of the day for me was when my father-in-law gathered all the children in a circle around him on the floor and they did the Resurrection Eggs together (a set of 12 eggs that each contain a little trinket that helps tell the Biblical account of Easter.) It was neat to see the kids answer his questions, and tell the Easter story in their own words. One of those parental moments where you start to think that maybe, just maybe, you might be doing something right after all!!
We hope you had a wonderful Easter this year too, celebrating our chance at eternal life!

I have done substantial research on the "sugar high" that kids are supposed to go into after eating anything laced with that wonderful chemical. Most medical researchers consider this to be an urban myth, scientifically debunked. There are those who blame sugar for every ill on the planet. I, for one, side with the scientific types on this matter. And two of my kids were hyper with or without sugar. It made absolutely no difference.
There is the myth that if you shave hair it will grow back thicker. Most of the time this happens to young adolescent boys who start shaving at around 13 years of age, or girls (their legs) at 12 or so. Hummm. Sure enough the whiskers and hair gets thicker. Must be the shaving doing this. Let's just forget about the fact that as they shave they are growing up into adulthood.
As for Easter Baskets! As for Peeps! Blessed Peeps! As for jelly beans! As for Cadbury Eggs! Let em Rip! Just make sure the kids brush their teeth. As for the hyper drive they are in, it is excitement over having something sweet, and it is their being children. Just let the good times roll! Mom's need to not blame sugar for their children's high energy. Embrace the fun. Blame sugar for the cavities.
Now chocolate and caffeine... watch out for those bunnies! Caffeine isn't sugar. If something with sugar has caffeine, it's the caffeine. Just ask a Starbucks snob like your father.
We had a wonderful Easter also. Church services were exceptional. The commitment of the worship team was ever so appreciated. Pastor B. put up a three pointer, nothing but net, relative to the message. So, clear and so beautiful is the resurrection story. We had close friends over to our home, a new couple and their 18 month old son Noah, and one of our children. Having no grandchildren yet we find that our Easters are a little smaller and a lot less kinetic than they were in years past. My wife and I left a message on the front porch telling the Easter Bunny to skip our place this year. No one under the age of 56 here at the moment. Still, prep for church and dinner were sweet. And there I come back full circle. Easter, the resurrection, new life, eternal life, rebirth... it is sweeter than my most beloved Peeps! It's Sugar.
We skipped filling baskets this year and our kids didn't even notice. :)
It was good to see your family at the park today!
